The Ming Tombs
The Ming Tombs were constructed to house the emperors and empresses - 13 in all. Sometimes, the concubines were expected to be buried with emperor when he died - whether or not they were dead yet! They would have a big party, like a wake, then go off and hang themselves. Yikes!
The Tombs are characterized by a large Soul Tower in front of a man-made hill. The emperor (and company) are buried under the hill. Only one of the tombs has been opened. When the ancient artifacts from that tomb met the fresh air of the 20th century, many of the artifacts were destroyed. As a result, the government of China has decided that the other 12 tombs will remain unopened until scientist can figure out a way to preserve the contents.
